Adjustable Dumbbell Buying Guide

If you’re lifting weights or working out at home, you really need to invest in a good set of adjustable dumbbells.  When most people populate their home gym, they start with a set of 5-lb weights (or 10-lb or 20-lb).  The problem is, as you get further into your workout routine, you need more weight to keep improving and getting stronger.  That means buying new dumbbells again and again.  Not only is that expensive, but it makes it a real pain in the you know what to find room for all of them!

Enter the adjustable dumbbell.  The perfect answer to having all the different-sized dumbbells for your workout all at once.  Buy them once, one place to store them, and it gives you the added flexibility to change weights mid-workout.

What to Look For in a Set of Adjustable Dumbbells

You’ve probably ended up on this page because as you started to look for adjustable dumbbells, you realized it’s not that easy to find a good set that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.  Not to mention, there are at least THREE different types of adjustable dumbbells:  nested, dial, and standard sets (more on these later).

Continue reading to learn about all the things you need to take into consideration when shopping for your next set of adjustable dumbbells.  And, if you do it right, you shouldn’t ever have to do it again!

Weights Included & Storage

One of the first things that will narrow your search is how much weight you want or need on the dumbbells.  As you’ll notice in our list of top adjustable dumbbells above, we highly recommend getting a set that from top to bottom covers a wide range of weights.  This is basically so you never have to buy another set.  You’ll always be covered for any future workout.

Now, if you’re going to get a set with a lot of weights, make sure to consider storage.  This is the main reason we really like the nested weights like the PowerBlock.  There’s no need to find storage for all the extra plates.  They can be a real bear to find room for if you have lots of them.

Flexibility in Design

We’ve alluded to it a few times already, not all adjustable dumbbells are created equal.  We prefer the nested-style for simplicity, storage, and easy of use.   If you like the plates, consider a dial-system.  They’re easier for changing weights.  The only bonus to the standard bar and plates is that they are flexible and can be used in a barbell and for other free weight applications.  Which is best for you will likely depend on how you intend to use them most of the time.

Easy to Use

This is another reason to go with a nested style or dial system.  They’re just easier to use.  You can change the weights faster, and you’re less likely have an accident with dropping weights on your foot or damaging the floor.

It takes time to unscrew and screw on the nuts every time you change.  Not to mention that some of the standard plate sets even have a double screw nut to prevent loosening.  Great concept, but very time-consuming during your workout routine.

Affordability / Great Reviews

Ultimately, we’ll all pick out weights that fit our individual budgets.  If I may…please consider this when buying a set of adjustable dumbbells;  If you buy a good, quality set that has the widest range of weights, you’ll only buy once.  If you buy cheap adjustable dumbbells or you skimp on what’s included, you’ll likely end up buying again.  And, next time you’ll probably buy the good set anyway.  D yourself a favor and go for quality the first time around!

How do you know what good quality looks like?  The best way is to consider not only lists like the one above, but also customer reviews.  It’s amazing the amount of information at our fingertips these days.  Check out the prices and previous customer reviews on each of the sets shown above and make your own decision.  It should be fairly clear which sets customers like, and which they regret buying.  Don’t waste your money on junk!

Conclusion

Hopefully this adjustable dumbbell buyer’s guide was helpful in your search.  We really do hope you’re able to find exactly what you need.  Having the right tools in your gym will make all the difference in the world for your workouts.  Whether you’re trying to lose weight, bulk-up, or just stay in shape, everyone could benefit from good dumbbells.

As a quick reminder, we suggest considering PowerBlock’s Sport 24 Adjustable Dumbbells.  This set is flexible, easy to use, doesn’t need additional storage, and comes with an awesome 10-year warranty!  How can you go wrong???
