Travel Router for Hotels Buying Guide

Travel routers are an essential tool when traveling to hotels in this digital age.  The keep you and your data safe and secure, but also make connecting to the internet while on the road that much easier.  With your own portable router, you’ll be able to travel from hotel to hotel and connect your phone, laptop, and tablet almost instantaneously without all of them having to find the right wireless connection and then signing each device into their shared WiFi.

Why Do I need a Travel Router?

The hotel I’m staying at has free WiFi, do I still need a travel router for the hotel?  Yes, here’s why…

Security

Any shared WiFi connection would be potentially dangerous to the data you’re transmitting over the web.  Anyone else on that same network could, if skilled enough, steal your data as you send it over the wireless network.  By using a travel router in in the hotel, you will connect via the wired Ethernet port and produce your own wireless network.  You can now connect your phone, tablet, laptop, media streaming device, and more without fear of being hacked over the shared WiFi.

What about hotel public WiFi that is password protected?

Passwords protecting public WiFi make it “more secure”, but they don’t make it secure.  That just means that the person trying to hack your files would need to also have the password to get on the network.  It’s usually pretty easy to get WiFi password in a hotel.

What about a VPN Service?

VPN services are great and should be used if you’re going to be on public WiFi.  However, they cost money and typically require a contract with monthly payments.  A travel router allows you to not use the hotel WiFi at all.

Convenience

There’s another added benefit to using a portable router while traveling to hotels (or any public place really).  Every time you end up somewhere new, you have to sign each device onto the WiFi.  That means finding the correct SSID (WiFi name), logging on, and filling in the password.  Not too bad, right?  Well, you’ll need to do that on each of your devices.  With a travel router, you can save the info from the router in each device and only only need to plug the router into the wired connection.  You devices should pick up the travel router right away because they have it memorized.  Easy!

What Makes the Best Travel Router for Hotels?

Let’s face it, these routers are a must while traveling and staying at hotels.  There are many features that you can look for that will help you find the best one for your needs.  Some travel routers allow for media sharing and backing up your mobile devices.  Just like your home router, some have just a 2.4GHz band and others also have the faster 5GHz band.  In addition, some of the best travel routers for hotels have added security features or power banks for keeping your mobile devices charged while on the go.

Even Best Hotel WiFi Still Needs Travel Router

Media Sharing/Mobile Device Backup

One cool byproduct of portable travel routers is their ability to share media with other devices on the same network.  Some of the ones on the list above have apps that make this easier.

Furthermore, backing up your mobile device is a very nice feature on some routers made for travel.  This is done by plugging a USB stick or external hard drive to the router and then connecting your device (i.e. iphone, android smartphone, ipad or other tablet) to the network and then backing up the data from your device to the hard drive or stick.  This helps free up hard-to-find space on mobile devices that can be difficult to transfer otherwise.

Dual Band/Single Band WiFi

Nearly all of portable routers have connection to the 2.4GHz band, but some of the best ones have dual bands.  You can also connect to them using the 5MHz WiFi frequency.   This frequency does not have the range that the other one does, but it does typically allow for faster speeds and less network interference.

Secure Travel Router for Hotel Keeps Out Best Hackers

Security

This is the real reason for buying and using a travel router in the first place.  It’s just not safe to connect to hotel WiFi and then do things on the internet like signing into email, shopping, or least of all…online banking.

A router would allow you to have your own wireless network and not share with anyone that you don’t know.  Some of them even come with added security features like randomized SSIDs and passwords directly from the manufacturer.

Some routers on the list above even let you connect using a VPN.  This gives you the added security browsing the web through a virtual private network, keeping you safer than you are without it.

Built-in Power Bank

Did you notice that some of the portable routers above have power banks included?  A power bank is basically an external battery much larger than a typical cell phone battery.  It can hold a charge and be used as a portable charger when you don’t have access to an outlet or vehicle cigarette lighter.  These are an added bonus and well worth the extra money as long as it doesn’t add too much size to the router.  The bigger the better when we’re talking about mAh’s in batteries.  That’s how much juice they can hold!

Affordability/Customer Feedback

These portable routers are super affordable.  The basic models start around $25, and even the more expensive models with lots of extra features usually cost less than $100.  That’s not much for keeping your data safe.  Think of what it could cost you if someone hacks the password to your email, shopping accounts, or bank account.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading all about travel routers for hotels.  We think it’s best that you heed our advice and move forward with buying one before your next business trip.  This is an issue that’s not easy to see or even understand sometimes.  The convenience and security that comes with one of these mini routers is worth way more to you than the $30-$50 bucks one will cost you.  Our favorite router, and the one we think fits hotel travel the best is the RAVPower AC750 FileHub.  It has nearly all the bells and whistles and includes dual band and a power bank!

If you’re not tech savvy at all and need something a bit easier to use and understand, consider our premium choice, the Securifi Almond.  Funny name, but this travel router has some added security features, but also includes a touchscreen for easier use and better visibility.
