Quiet Wall Mounted Range Hood Buying Guide

Most of the time, consumers shop for range hoods visually, buying what they feel looks good in their home and flows well with their existing kitchen.  We’re focusing solely on range hoods that are specifically only wall-mounted and operate at lower noise levels.  That doesn’t really shouldn’t change how you shop for them though.  That’s the point of us compiling the list of the quietest wall mount range hoods.  Now you can visually look through our list above and identify which fits your needs best.  No hopping around to several pages.  All the information has been assembled in one spot for you to peruse quickly, including all the published air flow and noise level information.

What to Look For in Quiet Wall Mount Range Hoods

There’s no rocket science here.  We’re going to be looking for lower noise levels, most often measured in decibels.  For those that don’t know, lower is better on this scale.  Something that’s going to be very important to consider during this exercise is to also understand air flows.  When it comes to exhaust, more flow means removing the poor air quality quicker.  Of course it’s easy to make a range hood that is quiet if there is no air flow.  So, it’s the combination of high air flow and low noise levels that we’ll be most concerned with.  Appearance, price-point, and customer feedback will each also be important to us however.

Kitchen with Range Hood

Noise Level

Of course if you want the quietest wall mounted range hood, you’re going to be concerned with the noise level.  No matter which range hood you pick, the fans will make noise as they exhaust air.  Everything from the fan type and manufacturer to the insulation and materials will affect how loud or quiet the range hood will be in your kitchen.  You probably don’t care too much why it’s quieter, but we’ve at least posted the published noise levels for each of our recommendations above, and their maximum levels range from 54 dB to 72 dB.  If you’re aware, the decibel scale is logarithmic, not linear, so 70 dB is actually twice as loud as 60 dB.

Air Flow

Typically, range hoods that are quieter are just due to low air flow.  That doesn’t do anyone any good.  You need adequate air flow to exhaust the low-quality air from your kitchen.  Why even have a range hood if you’re not going to be able to get it out?  Most wall-mounted hoods can move between 700-900 CFM (cubic feet per minute).  The larger the number, the more air movement, and thus the faster it evacuates from your kitchen.  We have a range hood CFM calculator to help you figure out how much air flow is really needed in your kitchen.

Most hoods have a few different speed settings.  When you use the lower settings, the noise will be less.  Having a higher maximum airflow doesn’t force you to use it, but it sure is nice to have when it’s needed.  You should try to get as much flow as possible while still meeting a good decibel level (under 70 dB is preferred).

Under Cabinet Range Hood

Wall Mount vs Under Cabinet

In case you’re not familiar, we should mention that all of the range hoods on this page are the wall-mount version.  These are typically used where there is nothing, including cabinets, above the stove range where the hood will reside.

By contrast, another popular type is called an under-the-cabinet range hood.  You can probably guess that this type of hood mounts under a cabinet that is above the stove range, similar to the one shown here in this picture.  These are used when there is no room for a larger, wall-mounted range hood.

Materials/Appearance

No one’s going to buy an ugly range hood, so this is an intuitive point, but it’s important to note that hoods range in materials, with the vast majority of them being made of stainless steel.  However, other common materials used in wall mount range hoods are wood, different finishes on stainless (brushed, black, etc), and even copper.

Price-Point

How much should you pay for a wall mounted range hood?  That’s a tough question to ask because the answer is probably different for everyone, depending on your budget.  Hoods range from roughly $150 and go up to $1000+, but most are between $200-$500 with the difference in price coming from air flow, decibel level, materials used, lighting options, and interface panel.  Some interfaces are a couple buttons and others have an actual screen on them for data interaction.

Customer Feedback/Reviews

It doesn’t really matter what type of item you’re looking to purchase.  If it’s over $50-$100, it’s probably a good idea to do a bit of research and see what kind of luck other consumers have had with their experience and that product.  We’ve selected range hoods that have had good feedback and positive reviews, but we always recommend that you check them for yourself and see what recent customers have had to say on the item you’re interested in.

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to read through our quietest range hood reviews and comparison.  Hopefully you feel better equipped to make an informed decision on which best suits your needs.  As a quick reminder, it’s important to focus on noise levels and air flow too, not just he appearance and price of the hood.  It’s also a great idea to read through some of the positive and negative (if there are any) reviews so that you can get a better idea of what you might run into.

Balancing all of these factors, we recommend the Chef WM-538.  However, if you truly want the quietest wall mount range hood, the Xtreme Air PX-02 should really be your top choice and worth the extra few bucks!
